Thinking about publishing with SparkPress? Here’s an independent, sourced look at whether it’s a legitimate hybrid publisher or one to avoid — measured against the IBPA hybrid-publisher criteria, the ALLi Watchdog, and Writer Beware, and last checked on 2026-06-09.

Key findings

  • Proceed with caution — meets 11 of the 11 IBPA hybrid-publisher criteria.
  • Author pays: ~$10,000 all-inclusive flat fee (printing of ARCs and final books is additional).
  • Author keeps their rights.
  • Distribution: trade distribution.

Our assessment

SparkPress is a hybrid imprint founded in 2013 by Crystal Patriarche (CEO of SparkPoint Studio), with Brooke Warner serving as publisher alongside sister imprint She Writes Press. Authors pay a disclosed all-inclusive flat fee of $10,000 to publish; the cost of printing ARCs and final books is extra.

In return, authors receive 60% of net on print sales and 70% of net on ebooks (the SparkPress website and 2024 Author Handbook both cite 70%; an earlier ALLi interview with Warner cited 80% — the lower figure appears to be the current operative rate). Trade distribution has been handled by Simon & Schuster since August 1, 2024, replacing the prior Ingram Publisher Services/Publishers Group West arrangement.

SparkPress vets submissions on editorial merit, publishes under its own imprint and ISBNs, and was involved in shaping the IBPA Hybrid Publisher Criteria. Audio rights default to SparkPress in the standard contract but can be reverted on written request; film and translation rights generally remain with the author.

MATERIAL STATUS NOTE: In February 2025, Brooke Warner announced that She Writes Press is joining The Stable Book Group (a new independent publisher collective) and that SparkPress "will continue to publish books through 2026" before the imprint is shuttered. As of June 2026, SparkPress appears to be in its final publishing season and is no longer a viable long-term publishing partner for new authors.

No Writer Beware listing exists and SparkPress does not appear on ALLi's rated-services page, so no formal ALLi rating can be assigned. No BBB profile was located.

The upfront author investment is a meaningful financial risk under any circumstances; the imminent closure of the imprint elevates that risk substantially for prospective authors signing new contracts.
